His regiment,The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, was part of the failed 1943 Dodecanese campaign when the island of Leros was overun by a German counter invasion and the British became POWs. He and his fellow POWs were interned in Germany eventually being freed after a winter forced march (away from approaching Russians) of some 400 miles when they encountered advancing US forces.
