The earliest known photograph of Deddington Market Place. The tall hats and other evidence suggest circa 1860. (Photography was only invented about 20 years before that.)
The town pool can be seen in the bottom right-hand corner. This was the subject of contentious campaigns in 1845 & 1854 by The Rev.Brogden to get the 'insanitary' pool filled in. He did not succeed. It was eventually filled-up in 1861, seemingly without contention, with an ornamental pump over it. A metal cover on the green in Market Place, behind the bus shelter, now marks the spot
To make the picture discernible, a great deal of restoration has been done on it. The original print was loaned by the estate of Mrs Ivy Price.
